Differences in R&D between different types of ownership
Table 9 compares the characteristics of UK-owned and foreignowned firms in the UK1000. The UK-owned firms are also broken down by their listing status. As in the previous UK1000 Scoreboard, slightly less than three quarters (74%) of R&D investment in 2008 came from UK-owned companies; and 43% of UK1000 companies were foreign-owned.
In 2008, both UK- and foreign-owned firms increased their investment in R&D, although the former did so at a significantly faster pace. On average, sales also grew faster among UKowned firms than foreign-owned firms. Likewise, UK-owned firms achieved higher levels of profitability (operating profit as percentage of sales).
