Summary
Table 6 summarises the pattern of investment in R&D and other key business performance characteristics according to listing status across the UK1000. It also shows the comparable statistics for the UK firms within the G1000. The key points are:
- the UK’s 46 biggest R&D investors, which are included in the G1000 largest R&D spenders worldwide, conducted 62% of the UK1000’s R&D;
- the UK46 grew their R&D by just over 11% over 2008, faster than their global peers; and
- listed companies conducted more than two thirds (69%) of all the R&D in the UK1000. They also grew their sales faster and achieved higher levels of profitability than unlisted firms.
