The concentration of R&D
In 2008, 81% of total R&D expenditure by the UK1000 is attributed to its 100 biggest investors. Of these, the 46 UK firms in the G1000 accounted for 62% of R&D by the UK1000. These 46 firms spent over three fifths (62%) of their R&D in three sectors – pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, fixed line telecommunications and banks.
